History of Hancock County Health Department
In March of 1977 the Hancock County Board passed a resolution creating the Health Department. On February 1, 1978 it became an operational department located in two rooms of the Hancock County courthouse with two employees- a nurse administrator and a secretary. By 1985 the health department grew to fourteen employees so broad of Health purchased the former telephone building across the street from the courthouse.
On November 4th, 1986 the residents of Hancock County passed a referendum thus switching the health department from a resolution to a referendum health department.
By 2002, more space was needed to provide services and the health department purchased the former Midstate College Building on Wabash Avenue. The Hancock County Dental center was added in the spring of 2006, providing dental services to Medicaid and non-insured clients. In the fall of 2008, the health department built additional offices.
